Dropping the plot bomb

Suisei no Gargantia 4

Ledo: Amy what’s that down there under the ocean?

Amy: My tears, from my so easily discarded love.

Ledo: Silly Amy, that’s what the ocean is made of but I’m being serious here. There is something important down there.

Amy: Maybe it’s the plot.

Ledo: Don’t be silly at best it’s another beach episode. Oh goodness you were right, the plot is down there!

So Ledo uncovers the plot bomb which proceeds to explode in his face in the form of a ten minute dialog presented to him in video form. This is normally a terrible way to give us a plot but I’m satisfied as the plot given to us as it completely changed the stories lore. All the information we’d been given to us to this point by Ledo was proven wrong to some degree and we are left wondering what he’ll do now. Although the plot bomb is rare Suisei no Gargantia isn’t the only anime to drop it so late in the game, Steins;Gate for example drops the plot bomb in episode 12 whilst most anime tend to reveal their cards earlier on. Death Note, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Shiki and Ga-Rei Zero are all examples of the normal world being disrupted in the first episode or three instead of later on as a surprise.

This idea of a plot bomb shouldn’t be confused with a mid-story character death though as although it can change the entire story it’s not the same thing and much easier to pull off a writer then a dramatic reveal like Suisei no Gargantia did earlier this week.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who appreciates a good plot bomb and I’m sure I’ve forgotten some classic examples but that’s what you guys are for right?

  1. I mostly agree with you, but Madoka Magica did drop a plot bomb (or at least I consider it to be one).

    • It certainly is. The end of episode 3 was a game changer which changed the tone of the entire anime. Not many anime have moments like that so it’s nice to see.

      • I’d consider Homura’s flashback to be a plot bomb too. Up until that point, her motives were still completely unknown to the viewer, so that really did change the direction of the story.

Another one that comes to mind is the last episode of The Tatami Galaxy. I don’t know if you would call it a plot bomb or a revelation, but just thinking about it makes me want to rewatch that show.
