Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

The following contains no spoilers so even if you haven’t watched Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 you can still read this. So two days ago i’d never heard of Tokyo magnitude 8.0 and once I obtained it I watched 11 episodes in a 12 hour period making it a new personal record for fastest time to watch an entire anime. Bet you want to know why I watched so fast and my simple answer is that it was really really good.

Although the main premise of the anime is the earthquake that hits Tokyo this anime is more about the characters. The female lead, Mirai is a middle school girl who is unsatified with home life and secretly wishes that everyhing would break. Wish granted.

Although she whines a lot about everything she has every reason to as she is very unlucky when it comes to trivial thing but incredibly lucky when it comes to life and death situations. She grows and changes over the coarse of the anime and you really feel for her situation and you’re happy when she succeeds. At least I was anyway. She cares greatly for her little brother Yuuki and they both play a huge role in each others survival.

Mari, the adult of the group takes it upon herself to care for the two children she has never met before all whilst trying to find her own child in the process. The last four episodes were very heartwarming and full of drama so if that is your thing yo will love this anime. There is also some really good animation in the series particularly when stuff is falling down because of the earthquake and the tremors that follow.

If you have seen this anime I can recommend some anime which are similar or at least reminded me of Tokyo magnitude 8.0 and those are Michiko to Hatchin and Summer Wars. Similarites are more about the characters than the whole earthquake scenario.

  1. Sounds interesting. I always like the earthquake survival stories. I’ll give this a watch.

Have you read the manga “Dragon Head”?

    • Good job 🙂

Aside from the quick look at the Wikipedia page just now I’ve never heard of Dragon head. Kind of sounds like Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. I should give it a read.

  2. Nice dude! like i watched this anime like march of 2011 like before the earthquake in Japan happened… and i was like… NOOO!!! and now i regret watching it since i’m thinking that its my fault that the earthquake happened in Japan…

    anyways just sharing.

    • It’s not your fault…. Probably…. The introduction said there was a 70% chance it would happen in the next 30 years. It’s just a freak coincidence it happened in 1 year.
